Currently Listening: Rosie Thomas

These Friends of Mine

I’ll be honest- I’ve known about Rosie Thomas for almost two years. Even more honest- I normally don’t like music like this. However, she’s got an extremely wide vocal range for someone her size that lends itself to a very deep and powerful melodies. I’d call her a cross between Indie and Folk. A friend of mine and I even saw her live and it was a truly phenomenal show. Her music is great for when you’re feeling a little introspective, you need to relax, or possibly stuck on the bus/subway while it’s raining (yeah, that happens to everyone I’m sure).

Check out any of her albums on Amazon. My personal favorite is “These Friends of Mine.”

Currently Listening: Metro Station

Metro Station

Best album I’ve bought (er, downloaded) in a while. Metro Station is a cross between synthesizer, pop, indie, rock, and emo-styles of music. All I can say it’s one of only a handful of albums I can rate at 5 stars for 2008. Buy now from Amazon.

July Music Review

I had told myself that I would do this monthly. Well I’ve failed myself (and you) so I will try and make this one worth it. Without further ado…

Eluvium [Copia] A new take on classical. A little piano, a little electronic, and a few lingering organ sounds. Great for studying or working too. Check out “Prelude For Time Feelers.”

****½

Rosie Thomas [These Friends of Mine] Soft, a little folksy, but very catchy. Similar to an American version of Dido.

****

LCD Soundsystem [Sound of Silver] Good beat, keeps you moving..songs are a little nondescript.

***½

Editors [An End Has a Start] A great sophomore album from our cousins across the pond. If you like British pop rock (Bloc Party, Arctic Monkeys) you’ll love the Editors.

****

More to come for August. If anyone has any suggestions leave a comment.

April Music Reviews

Ever since the demise of my 5g ipod (R.I.P.) I have been having to use a smart playlist for good ol’ greeny (ipod mini from 2003). This playlist loads the last 3 months of new additions to the itunes library. Currently, I have a (respectable?) 4800 songs. That being said, only about 900 or so actually make it on to the ipod during the sync. So, until Apple releases the new ipod (with iphone-like slickness) then this is where it’s at for now.

A note on the rating system- 0 to 5 stars (0 meaning the cd is horrible trash that “deserves a slow, torture-filled death” and 5 meaning “I can’t believe I have lived without hearing this every hour of my waking life”)

Without futher ado, I personally recommend the following bands (albums)… Continue reading →

Review: LaLa

The good: Lala.com provides an easy, inexpensive, and entertaining way to trade used CDs; the site also hosts a decent assortment of Internet radio stations. Lala also offers low-cost new CDs.

The bad: Some CDs take months to ship from the Have List. For the best experience, you need to create a relatively large Have List containing 50 or more CDs. Continue reading →
